On the evening of April 15th, Northern Taiwan faced a potential power outage crisis! The cause was the 403 Hualien earthquake, which resulted in multiple generator failures in various areas, particularly affecting the Hoping Power Plant and Taichung Power Plant, where repair work was further delayed due to aftershocks.
Additionally, the Datan Power Plant experienced unit tripping. Adding to the woes, the recent hot weather led to increased electricity usage, and with solar energy generation reaching zero, the power supply across Taiwan became even more strained, with the evening operating reserve capacity rate dropping to 2.8%.
In response to the increased pressure on power supply, Taiwan Power Company activated emergency dispatch mechanisms, with major corporations like TSMC responding by urgently reducing their power usage. This action helped raise the operating reserve rate to 6%, averting a potential blackout in Northern Taiwan.
This situation mirrors the power outage on May 17th, 2021, where insufficient power supply due to decreased solar energy generation led to widespread blackouts. Fortunately, large companies like TSMC quickly deployed emergency diesel generator sets to temporarily stabilize the power supply.
AMPOWER, as a provider of emergency power systems assisting companies like TSMC in establishing backup power, takes pride in our contribution. We remain committed to helping businesses set up rapid and reliable backup power solutions to ensure uninterrupted operations and production.
